Drilling through a stone wall
I am trying to put some blinds up and need to drill into a thick stone wall. My current drill ain’t hacking it.

Can anyone tell me what I need to get the job done? I was looking to a Bosch hammer drill for about £70 on eBay, coupled with a silicone carbide masonary bit

Thanks cuntos

Brunno, get this £30 comes with drill bits and safety clutch, if you want a cheap one and only using it occasionally.

I was referring to the fact that you came onto WHO to ask a specific question, thus not fully knowing what you're doing.

As stated before, you'd save money by actually getting someone in to do it for you. He'll already have the right tools, the experience, the know how, he'll clean up after himself, and you wont be left with tools you wont really have any future use of.

No shame in doing it that way. If you dont know, you dont know.

diamond tipped drill bit should do the trick.

Pay a bit more for an SDS with a clutch and your wanking hand will remain intact and ready on demand.

What lower said, bloke over the road from me (plumber) drilled through thick stone - the drill jammed and he broke 3 bones in his hand & wrist and ended up off work for nearly a month, best to cough up and pay someone to do it I reckon.

BOSCH GBH 2-24 D 2.8KG CORDED SDS PLUS DRILL 240V

Bruuuno, that's what I got for drilling similar size holes through concrete. As I said don't know what type of stone you've got, maybe an idea to ask locals how they went about doing similar.

Whatever you do watch a few YouTube videos on how to use it or you could smash your wrist up easily if the bit gets stuck and the machine spins in your hand at speed.

Re: Drilling through a stone wall
Someone mentioned Hilti. Hire this or equivalent. Combined with a decent drill bit it will piss through stone. I have a slightly larger version and it comfortably put a 20mm bit through a stone pillar for hanging a gate.I was more worried about cracking the pillar than the drill. To be honest I'm surprised that a normal hand held hammer drill - de walt makita, bosch, whatever, is struggling with such a small hole. Are you sure you just haven't just got a cheap shit drill bit?

Something me and Pickle can agree on.
Used Makita for 30 years and despite being the bollox a little vacuum attachment wouldn't go amiss

I'd use a diamond bit. Around £2,000.

Laser drilling looks ideal, no problems with hard stones, can't fuck it up accuracy.

And you can torture James Bond.

Re: Drilling through a stone wall
Its a job you dont really know how to do, and you'll spend upwards of £150 just doing it on the cheap, so my advice would be to pay someone who does know what they're a days money to come round and do it for you.

Re: Drilling through a stone wall
You need to treat it like ceramic or marble.

Use a diamond tipped drill bit (you may go through a few), if you can't get one, buy a decent ceramic drill bit. Mark the point you wish to drill by making a small indentation with a pin or nail. Drill at slow to medium speed until you get through the face.

If you want a 7mm hole start with a 4 or 5mm ceramic or diamond tipped bit and avoid pushing the drill if possible.

Once you have a decent neat hole to a good depth, use a bigger drill to make the hole the right diameter. Do not rush, it may take some time

You could always go full on and use a Hilti.
Brutal but your blinds won't be coming down in a hurry.
